This guy won the annual solo competition organized by Singapore Polytechnic Symphonic Band, held on 07 Nov 07. His name is Kelvin Tan Zhi Hong. He plays the tuba. We are all very proud of him. Look out for him during our annual Musical Delights concert on 6th Jan 08.

Also congrats to Johan and Faidhi for getting 1st & 2nd runner-up! and kudos to all other participants: yuting, desmond, zhenyang, yueyuan, vincent, brenden, jiaming, jenny, alvin. Everyone did their best and made this year competition a super success! Yeah!

Band Etiquette by W.A. Foss

Performing instrumental music ensembles, whether orchestras or bands, generally adhere to established standards of behavior for public performances and for rehearsal efficiency. These standards date back to the 1400's, and have thus proved their worth by their longevity in performing ensembles.

- Be ready to rehearse/perform at the scheduled starting time. This usually means arriving early enough to set up, warm up, and tune, before the start of the rehearsal or performance.

- The order of music is listed prior to rehearsal. Have your music ready as quickly as possible.

- Pay close attention to the conducting and verbal directions of the person conducting the ensemble, including ceasing to play when so directed. This includes not talking when the conductor or your section leader is trying to give directions.

- Mark your music in PENCIL Only. This saves a lot of rehearsal time and allows for different interpretations in future music uses without destroying it.

- Come to rehearsal with your part prepared. There is little time between concerts to prepare music. Every part is important, whether 1st or 4th.

When you agree to do something, do it. If you let people down, they'll stop believing you. When you follow through on your commitments, people take you seriously.

Synopsis

Based on the hit comic book by Tomoko Ninomiya, this is a fun-filled quirky romantic story of 2 very opposite people.

Megumi Noda, or “Nodame” is a piano student at Momogaoka College of Music. An extremely talented pianist who wants to be a kindergarten teacher, she prefers playing by ear rather than reading the music score. She is messy and disorganized, takes baths several days apart and loves to eat, sometimes stealing her friend’s lunchbox when it is filled with delicacies.

Shinichi Chiaki, is Momogaoka’s top student. Born into a musical family, he is talented in piano and violin and has secret ambitions to become a conductor. An arrogant multi-lingual perfectionist who once lived abroad in the music capitals of the world as a young boy, he feels mired in Japan because of a childhood phobia.

They meet by accident. Nodame quickly falls in love, but it takes much longer for Chiaki to even begin to appreciate Nodame’s unusual qualities. Their relationship causes them both to develop and grow. Because of Nodame, Chiaki transfers into the Conductor Division, leads a student orchestra and begins to have a broader appreciation of people's musical abilities. Because of Chiaki, Nodame faces her fears and enters a piano competition. Opportunities open up as both begin taking risks, stretching themselves far more than they ever thought possible.

Announcement Time!

To those members who are going for the Japan Trip, please submit a deposit of S$200.00 to our Tour Committee (Kay Miang or Yeow Ming) by 27th February. No delay people, they just gotta need it soon to carry on with the whole tour plan. History shall not happen again. :) Arigato!

Next, to all SLs, please submit the list of performers playing for [Musical Extravanganza] which is held on 13th May 2007. In addition, give a seperate list of performers who will be playing with the choir according to the instrumentation needed. If there's any doubts, do clarify with either Amelia or Weijie.

Take care everyone, time is short, we need to get things done, we need to put up a good performance so do try to come for all band practices. Last of all, start promoting this concert and sell the tickets. Information will be updated soon in the blog.

Finally, band practice resumed on Friday, four days ago. It was kind of sad to see a very small band as I’m so used to the bigger band that we’ve always been. Anyway, we tried out a few pieces like [Elizabeth], [The Sound of Music] & [Highlights from Chess]. It’s so tiring playing them after so long of not playing any instruments. And we got new nominations for our student conductor who will battle it out using [Highlights from Chess] next practice. All the best to the three guys!

Hi my dear band mates.. :D

Ok, please wear comfortable clothings on Sunday when reporting. Don't have to wear Band T-Shirt, as I realised almost all of us will be moving about, carrying instruments, making your nice sweet hair styles. Just wear anything that is comfortable! Sorry for any inconvenience caused!

Please help all the members to load and unload the instruments.. there are so many~ Oh ya, percussion too! Thank you in advance! =D

One more week to end of CC job. and my only concern & last word is

"PLEASE SELL TICKETS!"

Currently, it's unknown of the figures that we have achieved so far but we'll do a ticket count this coming Tuesday & maybe Friday. And I do hope that the 5 tickets are sold by individual's effort and more will be asking tickets from us. It's barely 7 days left to sell.

Our only target: "FULL HOUSE!"

It's possible that we can get a full house but it's definitely impossible that we can't reach that. When did we ever reach a target audience lower than 839 (the total numbers of tickets to consider full house)? We don't and we not going to do that for this MD. Let's make this concert a memorable one! yeah!

Important Notes

- band members to return us all unsold tickets on Fri (better not return, but instead sell it)

- if there's a need to book tickets at the reception table, do pass it to us, stating names & numbers of tickets by Fri, if not come earlier than the reporting time on Sun (tba soon)

- continue to look for us for both circle and stall seats, if you need to do some last minute promoting, posters are still available from us

- guys please get yr maroon red tie from fc3 co-op, and white long sleeves shirt for concert

- return all ticket money asap, before leaving the band after the concert as we need to settle accounts within a week (we need yr cooperation)

More clear announcements will be updated regularly till the concert day so do visit here often.

And I will like to thank all the band members esp SLs who collected all the money & reporting stand numbers in such a short and fast time back on Friday. yeah!
